Why stay an Orphan when you're really an Heir?

Before Jesus went to the cross, he told his bewildered disciples that they would receive ‘another, just like me’ – the Holy Spirit. “I will not leave you as orphans, I will come to you,” he promised. He explained that the Spirit would ensure they did not feel alone or bereft or in need. Read more...

Abide in my love by Andrew Murray

This love of God to his Son must serve, O my soul, as the glass through which you are to learn how Jesus loves you. As one of his redeemed ones, you are his delight, and all his desire is to you, with the longing of a love which is stronger than death and which many waters cannot quench. His heart yearns after you, seeking your fellowship and your love. Were it needed, he would die again to possess you. As the Father loves the Son and cannot live without him, cannot be ‘God the blessed’ without him, so Jesus loves you. His life is bound up in yours; you are to him inexpressibly more indispensable and precious than you ever can know. read more...

Working from Rest

I had never been attracted to this picture of taking on Jesus’ yoke. I think it merged with images I had of dejected slaves in wooden yokes being dragged along to a life of misery. Yokes were never designed for people. So why does Jesus use this image? Was he looking at the familiar scene of a pair of oxen drawing a heavy cart? He must have been aware of the sense of burden and strain that his hearers lived under - as if they were yoked and heavy laden. And he knew how light and easy and restful his way of living was in comparison. He knew that they had not been created to bear those heavy burdens or to carry that uncomfortable yoke. So he calls to them “Come to me…and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me…” Jesus can only offer us what he already has. He has rest, so he can give it. Read more ...
